During the 2006-2007 school year students became aware of the genocide occurring in Darfur, Africa. In countless villages, people are being killed by the Janjaweed, a corrupt political group, in large numbers due to their race. The students of D.C. Everest Jr. High, were given an assignment to cut out and color as many paper dolls as possible. All together, the students made 1,671 paper dolls. They were later be pasted onto large black sheets of paper and sent to Elm Place Middle School, Highland Park, Illinois, where attending students are collecting dolls year round, for as long as it takes for them to reach their goal of 400,000 dolls, and send them to Darfur as grave markers. Some time later, at the world premier of Oceans 13, George Clooney, Matt Damon, Ellyn Burstyn, Jerry Weintraub, and Bill Zwecker signed the D.C. Everest dolls. So far, the students at Elm Place Middle School have collected 90,785 dolls.
